George Ernest Taylor, affectionately known as Ernie to most and Big Ern to many, was born on November 8, 1943 to Red and Agnes Taylor in Hugo, Oklahoma. He rode into his last sunset on November 13, 2024 at his home in Hugo, at the age of 81. Ernie brought warmth and laughter into the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; grandson, Tripp Taylor and sister, Glenda Fry.

His family was his biggest pride and greatest joy, and his role as a father and grandfather was one, he cherished deeply. Ernie was a Christian and proud member of Chisum Trails Cowboy Church.

Ernie was admired not only for his accomplishments but also for his storytelling ability and the vibrant, larger-than-life personality that endeared him to many.

Ernie's journey began in a small-town setting, where he was raised by his parents, Red and Agnes Taylor. He would later go on to carve out his own path full of adventure, love and profound achievement. After graduating from Hugo High School, Class of 1961, he joined the United States Army until his discharge. Though he journeyed through higher education, his deepest passion and life's work resided not with academia but in the rodeo arena. He gained national acclaim and respect as an eight-time qualifier to the National Finals Rodeo and the 1973 RCA World's Champion in calf roping, becoming a genuine legend in the rodeo community. Ernie was inducted into the Prairie Circuit Living Legends Hall of Fame in 2019. He was also a Golden Gloves Champion boxer.  Known for his skills and dedication, Ernie was a hero to countless aspiring ropers, including his sons and grandchildren, who looked up to him not just for his accomplishments but for his unwavering spirit and love.

His personal life reflected the same profound richness. Ernie married the love of his life, Mary Ann Carroll, when he surprised her with a wedding ceremony in April of 1977. From this union came their two sons; Ernie and Will, who were the light of their life.

Ernie is survived by his sons, Ernie Taylor and wife, Krystle and Will Taylor and wife, Alex; grandchildren, Clancy, Jaxtyn and Tymber Taylor; his sweetheart of 16 years, Frances Anderson; step-daughter, LeAnne Gentry and husband, Donny of Blossom, TX; niece and nephew, Kimberly Bolding and Drake Fry along with too many other family and friends to count.
